Though there were conflicts between the various ali’i and kings from time to time, the people of the islands, for the most part, farmers and fishermen, were not inclined toward long-term war and life among the islands was relatively peaceful and practical.

Giovanni da Verrazano, an Italian-born navigator sailing for France, discovered New York Bay in 1524. Henry Hudson, an Englishman employed by the Dutch, reached the bay and sailed up the river now bearing his name in 1609, the same year that northern New York was explored and claimed for France by Samuel de Champlain. This is how New York was discovered, but its flag has a history as well.

On June 14, 1846, a small band of settlers marched on the Mexican garrison at Sonoma and took the commandant, Mariano Vallejo, prisoner, They issued a proclamation which declared California to be a Republic, independent of Mexico.The grizzly bear was a symbol of great strength while the star made reference to the Lone Star of Texas. The flag only flew until July 9, 1846 when it was learned that Mexico and the United States were already at war. Soon after, the Bear Flag was replaced with the American flag. It was adopted as the State Flag by the State Legislature in 1911.

Archeologists classify Kentucky\’s prehistoric past into six cultures that spanned 13,000 BC to 1,650 AD. These cultures were the Paleo-Indian culture, the Archaic culture, the Woodland culture, the Adena culture, the Mississippian culture and the Fort Ancient culture. From about 1650 until the arrival of the first white settlers, Native American battles broke out over control of the \”Great Meadow\” between the Shawnee tribes from north of the Ohio River and the Cherokee and Chickasaw tribes from south of the Cumberland River. During this time, no Indian nation held possession of the land that would eventually become Kentucky.
